A Statistical Survey on Medico-Legal Autopsy and Postmortem Inspection in Korea


Abstract
This is a statistical observation by the author based on data of so called the unnatural death brought to this Institute for medico-legal autopsy and postmortem inspection by all law enforcement agencies in Korea since the foundation of this Institute in 1946 to the end of the year of 1966.
The present report may be considered as the fifth report in that it follows the first, the second, the third and the fourth report. The report aims to reveal facts on various causes of unnatural death in Korea in an attempt to analyse 1,634 cases statistically.
The followings are the summary of results observed by the author on the statistical point of view on the disposition status of 32 cases of postmortem inspection and 1,602 cases of unnatural death through the medico-legal autopsy up to the year of 1966 since the foundation of the National Institute of Scientific investigation. The death due to the violence administered on the head was very common, and for the natural sudden death, the death due to disease of the circulatory system shows the largest number.
1. Numbers of autopsy made for the unnatural deaths were 1, 602 cases. Of these, 1, 038 cases were male and 564 cases, female.
2. Numbers of postmortem inspection made were 32 cases.
3. Injuries leading to the main cause of the death were taking the most largest number with 557 cases, 34.8 percents, and death due, to the starvation were 2 cases, (0.1 percent) taking the smallest number of the total.
4. Asphyxial death were 159 cases, 9.9 percents of the total, and drownings and fhrottlings were 60 cases showing the biggest number among the death.
5. For the death due to, injuries, skull fractures and brain injuries were the leading ahead as mentioned in the foregoings.
6. Death from abnormal temperature and electricity were only example for the death due to cold, burning and electricity.
7. There were 2 cases for death of starvation.
8. Infanticides were 30 cases, 1.9 percents of the total number.
9. For the death due to the poison ; 269 cases, 16. 7 percents, were recorced, and for the administered drug, barbiturates has been mostely being used.
10. For the natural sudden death ; 413 cases, 25.8 percents of the total, were recorded, and the death due to the disease of the circulatory system was taking the most of the total number with 102 cases in all.
11. Cause of death unknown due to the severe decomposition of the body were 164 cases, 10. 2 percents to the total number.
